Explanation of Dress Codes

Explanation of Dress Codes

In our Level 4 ESL class, our students went over different things they needed to do in order to get a job in the United States. They went over different skills and requirements they would need, types of jobs, and how to prepare for their job interview.

Something very important they went over is how to dress for an interview. However, different jobs require different dress codes and some of them can be very confusing! Here is a list of phrases that employers will use for dress codes!

1.    Casual

This term is basically a phrase we say when there is no dress code or that you can wear comfortable clothing. However, if you are dressing casually for a job, make sure that the clothes fit you appropriately and don’t display anything offensive or graphic.

For example: Women and men can wear a clean t-shirt and jeans with tennis shoes.

2.    Business Casual

This term is used when the employer would like you to wear something that would be considered appropriate or normal for an office. They would like you to appear clean and well kept. This is also considered a step up from jeans and a t-shirt.

For example: Women can wear dress pants or slacks with an appropriate blouse or shirt. Men can wear khakis with a polo shirt. No sneakers should be paired with this attire, instead men wear dress shoes or loafers and women wear closed-toe shoes.

3.    Smart Casual

This dress code phrase combines elements of both casual and business casual attire. It is phrased as the, “smart,” attire because it combines clothes from casual and business casual in a creative way that looks appropriate and clean.

For example: Women could wear a nice pair of dark jeans and a dressy blouse. The dressy top makes the pair of jeans seem dressier.

4.    Business or Informal

This phrase is a step up from all the other dress codes. Business or informal attire is usually a business suit or a pair of nice slacks and a blazer. This attire also suggests that the employees stick to business colors which include black, navy blue, gray, or brown or neutral colors.

For example: Men would wear a gray business suit and women would wear something similar with a pair of heels.
