Common American Greetings

Common American Greetings

Typically, during the first week of our ESL course, teachers will conduct various activities to help students feel comfortable in the classroom. In order to help students to get the best learning experience out of our ESL program, they will start the week by getting to know each other. One topic that teachers will go over with their students is greetings. There are many different ways to introduce yourself and greet someone. Below are a few common greetings you can use every day with friends, family, coworkers, and everyone else.

These greetings you can use casually with friends or family members.

–Hi / Hello

–How’s it going?

–What’s up?

–How ya been?

–What’s new?

–Long time no see

These greetings are more formal than the above greetings you can use with coworkers, family members, teachers, etc.

–Good morning / Good afternoon / Good evening

–How are you?

–Pleased to meet you.

On the other hand, when you receive a greeting from someone, there are many different ways you can respond. If you would like to try some different responses rather than the typical “I’m good” response, here are some common responses you can use.

–Can’t complain

–I’m hanging in there

–I’ve been better

–Keeping busy

In our ESL program, students will have a lot of opportunities to practice these greetings and more! If you are thinking of enrolling in an ESL course in the Los Angeles or Orange County area, visit our website American English Language School, or email info@aels.edu today!
