At American English Language School, we believe that learning a language goes hand in hand with understanding the culture where the language is spoken. That’s why we host Culture Week—an exciting event where students in our ESL program have the opportunity to explore and celebrate the diverse traditions, customs, and values that make up American life.
What is Culture Week?
Culture Week is a special part of our ESL program designed to immerse students in the cultural aspects of life in the United States. Throughout the week, students participate in a variety of activities, including:
-Cultural Workshops: Learn about American holidays, traditions, and etiquette.
-Interactive Events: Take part in games, storytelling sessions, and music performances that showcase American culture.
-Community Engagement: Explore local attractions or volunteer with organizations to gain firsthand experience of life in the U.S.
-Food Tastings: Sample traditional American dishes, from classic apple pie to regional specialties, while learning about the history behind them.
Why Culture Week Matters
For ESL students, understanding American culture is just as important as mastering grammar and vocabulary. Culture Week allows students to:
-Build confidence in social interactions by practicing English in real-life scenarios.
-Deepen their appreciation of American traditions and values.
-Strengthen bonds with classmates through shared experiences.
-Gain practical knowledge that makes adapting to life in the U.S. easier and more enjoyable.
Highlights from Previous Culture Weeks
In past Culture Weeks, students have enjoyed activities such as ordering at a restaurant in English, going to Irvine Spectrum to shop using English, and going to the movies. These hands-on experiences help students connect with American culture in a fun and meaningful way.
