How Thanksgiving is Celebrated in America

On the fourth Thursday of November, Americans celebrate a special holiday called Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a day meant to give thanks and spend time with your loved ones. The holiday is full of family and food. The traditions for Thanksgiving are generally the same: eating turkey with family. However, everyone celebrates the holiday a little differently.

Thanksgiving is traditionally celebrated by the whole family getting together to cook a Thanksgiving meal. Usually, families will prepare a delicious dinner for their families. However, some families will prepare a feast for lunch instead. Either dinner or lunch, there are usually a few common dishes that you will see every Thanksgiving. For example, the main part of the meal is turkey. When people think of Thanksgiving, they think of turkeys. Another big part of the Thanksgiving feast is ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, corn, and stuffing. Then when the meal is over, there is usually pumpkin pie for dessert.

During the meal, one tradition involves a turkey’s wishbone. Two people will grab each side of the wishbone while they make a wish. They will each pull their side of the wishbone until it breaks. Whoever has the biggest piece between the two will have their wish come true.

Also during Thanksgiving dinner, families will watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This parade is one of the oldest Thanksgiving traditions and the largest in the world. This parade is held in New York and lasts for three hours. It is full of huge balloons that have various animals and characters, floats, and live performances. The parade always ends with Santa Claus appearing to welcome the upcoming Christmas season. It is a parade that you will not want to miss!

Another tradition celebrated during Thanksgiving is saying thanks. Before eating together, each person at the table will say at least one thing that they are thankful for. Everyone will take turns until everyone has said something, and then everyone will be able to dig in and eat their delicious feast. Having a full belly is another tradition of Thanksgiving!
