Searching for a job is always a stressful task. But then, you get that email or phone call – they’re interested. They ask you to come in for an interview. For most people, the interview is even more stressful than the job search. And if you are not a native speaker, this can seem even more daunting because the interview will be in English. So, to help put you at ease, here are some tips to help you nail your next interview!
The first thing you need to do is introduce yourself and shake the interviewer's hand. You can add a "Nice to meet you" and be sure to smile when you are greeting them.
The person, or people, interviewing you will ask questions to get to know you and see if you will be a good fit for their company. They will most likely start the interview by asking you to tell them about yourself. When you hear this question, you don't want to tell them your whole life story. You also don't want to tell them too much personal information about yourself. You want to tell them about your past careers and experiences related to the job you are applying for now. Try to show the interviewer through your experiences that you are valuable and are the right person for the job.
Not sure how to describe yourself? Here are some good adjectives to help:
-Focused: use to show you are not an easily distracted person
-Hard-working: use to show you are a hard worker
-Proactive: use to show you are someone who takes control of the situation without having to be told to do so
-Ambitious: use to show a strong desire and determination to succeed
-Passionate: use to show strong feelings or belief
-Diligent: use to show you are hardworking and get your work done right
Here are a few common questions that interviewers ask. Practice answering the questions out loud. Be sure to speak slowly and be sure to enunciate your words. Keep practicing so you feel more confident in yourself for your real interview.
-Why do you want to work for this company?
-What are your greatest strengths?
-What are your weaknesses?
-Why did you leave your last job?
-How would your coworkers describe you?
-Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
-Do you have any questions for us?
If there is a question that the interviewer asks you that you don't understand, you can ask, "Can you please say it another way?" The interviewer can rephrase the question with words that are familiar to you. You can also ask for a synonym for a word that you don't understand. Don't be afraid to ask!
These are some things that will help you to prepare for your next English job interview. Be sure to be prepared for any question your interviewer may ask, and practice speaking English a lot before your interview, so you are confident in your speaking when the time comes. Good luck!
