Online vs. In-person Learning

Online vs. In-person Learning

Traditionally, learning has been done in person with a teacher and his or her students. However, as the world is changing, learning is changing as well. During the pandemic, students have turned to online learning through various different resources. While learning online might seem like a benefit for some, it can be seen as more difficult for others. Online learning has the advantage of convenience as it can be according to your schedule, but if you are trying to learn English, online learning can be a hindrance.

One of the problems with online learning is that it makes it easy to be distracted. You can have noises all around you, people interrupting, and the temptation of using your phone. Another big problem with online learning is that it makes it hard for teachers to give students more individual attention. Teachers are looking at the faces of all of their students through their small individual screens, and when teachers need to share their computer screen with the class, the students’ screens get even smaller. This makes it difficult for students to ask questions or let their teachers know that they are falling behind. It also makes it hard to work in groups with your classmates because while you are able to separate your group from everyone else and converse with them, the teacher is only able to be in one group at a time. This means that if your group is confused about what to do, you will have to wait for your teacher to come to your group. There is also the problem of being paired with students who do not want to do any work. You may be stuck with a partner that does not want to participate since there is no teacher to supervise.

While there are more advantages and disadvantages to online learning, we believe that in-person learning is the best way to improve your English. At American English Language School, we focus on conversation. Asking questions, having group discussions, and just talking to your teacher can be done better in person. Teachers are more aware of all of their students and their progress since they can walk around and help struggling students. It is also easier for teachers to distinguish between focused students and students not paying attention. Lastly, students feel more comfortable and are more willing to participate in a class discussion rather than on the computer.

For all of these reasons, we believe that in-person learning is more beneficial to your English learning experience. Email info@aels.edu to find more information about our ESL program and daily activities.
