English Greetings

English Greetings

Our next quarter starts on the first Monday in April. During the first week of our ESL classes, teachers and students do ice breaker activities and work on getting to know each other. Since we have smaller class sizes, it is easy for students to talk and get to know each other well. At American English Language School, we emphasize conversations. The best way to start a conversation with a stranger is to greet them. Are you not sure how to greet others? Here are the most common greetings to use in a conversation.

Hello! / Hi!

This is the most common and simplest way to greet someone new. It can be followed by asking how someone is doing. You can say hello to greet anyone.

Good morning / Good afternoon / Good evening

This greeting depends on the time of the day. You can use morning between 6:00 am to 12:00 pm, afternoon between 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and evening after 6:00 pm. It is another greeting to use with someone and they will typically respond with the same greeting.

It’s nice to meet you.

This is a greeting you may use when you first meet someone. It is a nice way to say that you are happy to have met that person and look forward to getting to know them.

What’s up?

This is a casual way to greet friends or classmates. It is common for people to respond with “nothing much.”

How’s life?

This greeting is causal and used with friends. It is a question asking someone how they are doing or what is new in their life.

            Long time no see.

When you have not seen someone for a long time, you can use this greeting. It is typically used among friends that run into each other after not seeing each other for some time.

           How are you doing?

This greeting asks someone how they are. This is also a more casual greeting. Most people will respond by saying they are good and ask how you are doing.

Try using the above greetings to start a conversation with someone new. You may not know how to start a conversation, but just using a simple greeting to a stranger can start a conversation. If you are looking to practice your English more to feel more confident starting a conversation, you should consider enrolling in a group ESL course. At AELS, you will have plenty of time to talk with others and get to know your classmates.
