Memorial Day Vocabulary

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that takes place on the last Monday of the month of May. Americans spend this day celebrating and mourning the soldiers that have died while serving in the United States military. 

A lot of Americans will gather together with their friends and family and have either a picnic or bbq outside. Some will also visit the grave sites of the soldiers that have died and place flowers or a United States flag next to them. 

Here are some vocabulary words associated with Memorial Day! 

1.    Memorial (noun) : a structure made to remember a person, group of people, or an event. 

For example: Memorial Day is a holiday to remember soldiers that have died. 

2.    Patriotism (noun): the love of your country and willingness to give anything up for it. 

For example: Patriotism can be shown in many different ways. 

3.    Patriot (noun): a person who loves and defends his or her country. 

For example: A true patriot is someone who stands up for their country. 

4.    Sacrifice (verb) : to give up something important or valued for the sake of something else. 

For example: The child was willing to sacrifice his candy in order to have healthy teeth. 

5.    Commemorate (verb) : to show respect or honor to something by celebration. 

For example: Memorial Day is a day to commemorate the people who have died while serving in the United States military. 

6.    Half-staff (noun): the position of a flag which is being flown below the top of its staff as a mark of respect for a person who has died. 

For example: The United States flag is put at half-staff from sunrise to noon to remember those that have died in the military. 

7.    Cemetery (noun): a place to bury the dead. 

For example: Many families visit the cemetery every Memorial Day to decorate the graves of dead soldiers.
