Books ESL Students Should Read

At American English Language School, we know that learning English happens in and out of the classroom. One way we like to encourage our students to practice their English is by reading books. This will also allow them to learn the social situations of our country as well as some slang or vocabulary practice they might not get to experience in their classroom. Here is a list of three English books for ESL learners to try.

1.    Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom

This beautifully written book is the story of a man watching his professor and mentor waste a way to disease. Through this experience the main character gets to see his professor in a new way and gets to learn the life lessons he needs through his mentor’s experiences.

2.    The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon

Christopher is a 15-year-old boy who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome. When his neighbors’ dog is murdered, he sets out in the night-time to explore and find out what exactly happened to it. The language of the novel reflects Christopher’s problems with communication due to Asperger’s. His pin-straight logical nature makes this book a simple and easy read for ESL readers and gives readers a fun exploration and mystery too!

3.     Mieko and the Fifth Treasure by Eleanor Coerr

This novel is a very popular and well known work of English literature that is short and perfect for ESL speakers to read. Mieko is a very talented calligrapher and artist, who is sent to live with her grandparents during the war. When she injures her hand during a bombing, Mieko is scared that she would lose her talent and her “fifth treasure,” which is the beauty in her heart. Her skills and her heart are the inspiration for her art, and she cannot be happy without them.

Choose any of these books and they are sure to be a hit!
