The American Way: Do It On Your Own - F1 visa application

The U.S. embassy and consulate have some key requirements before allowing any foreign language student to apply for F-1 visa status. First, every incoming student must be approved by a school, such as Optimus Language School, that is SEVP (student and exchange visitor program) approved. You can select a SEVP approved school you would like to attend (visit https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/school-search).

Once you are approved by the school in the United States that you wish to be a part of, you will then be a part of the SEVIS (student and exchange visitor information system). At this point, the U.S. SEVP approved school is able to provide an I-20 form to present to the consular office when attending a visa interview. In cases where families travel together, the I-20 form is only valid for an individual. All other family members must obtain their own I-20 forms; however, the associated SEVIS I-901 fee only needs to be paid once.

1. Select a SEVP approved school you would like to attend (visit https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/school-search)

2. be accepted by the school and get a Form I-20 from the school

3. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee and print out the receipt from the website
